Minutes - August 2008
In attendance were John Peterson, Sherrie Weller, Selena Vaughn, Joe Mosley, Willie Robison and Bryan Frater. Staff attendance was Steve Jernudd. Absent: Jim Moss, Clint Martin and Marie Bidney.

The Minutes for the July 28th Stated Board meeting were approved as amended.
Committee Reports:
Financial: Joe Mosley gave report
Architectural: Steve Jernudd reported that the Architectural Review Committee and Stacy Johnston met with Lt. Jud Beedy and Code Enforcement Officer, Lonnie Jones of the Daphne Police Department to discuss how the City and Lake Forest could more effectively work together in identifying and correcting city code violations in Lake Forest. Since this meeting, the city has issued 6 warnings for junk cars, 3 warnings for overgrown yards and 3 warnings for parking in the median. Stacy Johnston has also met with Tracy Miller of Daphne’s Public Works Department and discussed implementing the same type of system to report trash/garbage violations.
For the month of July, the Architectural Department has sent out 58 violation letters with 50 current and past violations corrected.
Building and Grounds: Willie Robison reported that we had no problems due to Hurricane Fay. Supplies did have to be removed from dry storage due to flooding caused by the deterioration of the walls. Sidewalks are completed at the Yacht Club.
Communications: Selena Vaughn reported that the September Lake Forester would be late getting out due to the candidate bios deadline being August 28th. Selena said a date needs to be established for a Meet the Candidates Night.
Food and Beverage: Sherrie Weller reported for the month of July the total sales at the Yacht Club were $16,625 with cost of goods totaling $8,045. Year to Date, the Yacht Club is $935 over budget. For the month, the 19th hole’s sales were $5,070 with cost of goods equaling $2,965; unfortunately, due to the lack of play on the golf course our year to date budget has taken a hit. We are $10,500 over budget. The Bayview lounge was slow for the month; sales equaled $1,628 with cost of goods totaling $1,431. In spite of being slow in July, our year to date numbers look good. We are $4,537 under budget.
Greens: Steve Jernudd mentioned the passing of John Falardeau, a long time Marshall here at Lake Forest; he was a good person and always had a kind word to say about everyone. He will be truly missed. Steve reported that the golf course is getting great reviews. The ad for greens play has been submitted to the paper, as of today we have had 12 golfers try the course due to the ad. The new golf membership books are ready. The City of Daphne will be doing repairs to the drainage pipe on hole #17.
Lake: John Peterson reported that the meeting of July 30th was well attended. There will be a Public Informational Meeting to be held on September 17th at the Daphne Civic Center to inform the general public on what is going on with the watershed. There will be a meeting with David Yeager of the NEP, Representative Randy Davis and News 5 Jene’ Young on Wednesday regarding a follow up story on the sediment problems with the lake. While David Yeager is in town they will be discussing the RFQ for the conceptional Management plan, he did send an email saying he thought he was going to get additional funding from ADEM to match his, the city’s and lake Forest’s donations. There are four alligators living in the lake that will be removed over the course of the next couple of weeks.
John Peterson and Marie Bidney had a meeting with Ken Eslava of the Daphne Search and Rescue Squad to discuss a long-term arrangement to house a facility to maintain and operate their duties out of; In return, we will be able to receive grant funding through several different avenues for dredging of the channel. They will prepare a lease arrangement, there will be a dollar amount for which they will pay us monthly to lease that land. Before we get too far we will want to confirm that there is money available for dredging and maintaining the channel that they will be using to access Mobile Bay.
Recreation: Steve Jernudd reported that the pool season is winding down; the pools will close after Labor Day. Lake Forest had contract with Alabama Pool Works to take care of the pools and lifeguards this summer and they handled the job well.
Yacht Club and Marina: Steve Jernudd reported that there are currently 23 out of 64 wet slips rented out and 79 out of 110 dry slips rented out. Steve said due to rate increase we had lost some boats. We received a letter from Sunset Bay Villas attorney regarding our turning the tennis courts at the yacht club into extra boat/camper storage, a request was made from the president of the Sunset Bay Villas association for Lake Forest to clean up the area around the boat storage facility.
General Manager Report: No Report
Member Comments:
Carl Kauffman brought up the subject of the dress code; he said that denim should not be allowed at a private golf course.
Old Business:
Review of Conceptional Drawings for Renovation: Steve received cost of Phase I renovation, the cost is $28,000 for the new offices, carpet and entranceway. John Peterson will assign the building and grounds committee to look over and approve plans for renovations.
New Business:
Meet the Candidates Night: A motion was made for the Stated Board Meeting and Meet the Candidates night to be held on Thursday, September 25th beginning at 6 p.m. in the Forest Room.
Proposed Annual Meeting By-Laws: A meeting has been set for September 9th for discussion and approval of by-law changes and/or additions.
Board Comments:
Willie Robison said we need to keep the membership apprized of what is going on and reminded everyone to go out and vote the following day.
Steve Jernudd reported that all political signs must be removed the day after the election.
