September Meeting
The September meeting of the Lake Forest Garden Club opened with our new president Connie Haines announcing the projects she had planned for this year. Then she told us about the fundraising raffles available for the ladies to purchase. Lance Harbison is the Agriscience teacher at Daphne High School and works with the Garden Club twice each year having plant sales. Connie presented him with a check from the Garden Club. Judy Baust read an inspirational message. Then Elaine Maxime, our first vice president gave the schedule of speakers for the up coming year. It will be a great year of varied subjects and new knowledge for all of us. Elaine did an outstanding job in getting new and interesting subjects of gardening for us to learn about this year.
Lance was our first speaker and though he speaks to us every September, he was funny, informative and we learn something new from him every year. He does wonderful work with the students at Daphne High preparing them for life after high school. We heard about the plants for the plant sale (some new varieties), the many classes offered to his students, and the many opportunities available to these students when they graduate. When Lance ended his presentation, Steve Jernudd the General Manager talked to the ladies about the upcoming changes at Lake Forest. He then answered all questions and assured us that this process will take a long time and plans will unfold and may even change with time and debate.
Elaine Maxime presented her 5-year plan for beautification in Lake Forest. She is coordinator and would like input. She said that Lance has agreed to grow plants that she wants. She will have many clubs and organizations involved to help with this project.
Dana Sawyer announced the Horticulture awards. Dorothy Larson announced the 50/50 winner. Six names were drawn for the beautiful centerpieces and two ladies won gift certificates from Lance Harbison for the plant sales. Connie Hines thanked the hostesses who were members of the board. The hostesses for this month were Connie Haines, Elaine Maxime, Anne Talton, Peggy Sheffield and Pam Perkins.
Ladies, if you have not paid your dues, please send $10 to Pam Perkins. If you have a friend who may be interested in learning more about gardening, call our President Connie Haines 626-6979. Bring them as a guest or as a new member. New Members are welcome.
